What freight class is 15 lbs per cubic foot?

A density of 15 pounds per cubic foot is Class 70 on the 2025 NMFTA scale. Class 70 covers densities from 15 up to (but not including) 22.5 PCF.

What freight class is 10 lbs per cubic foot?

A density of 10 pounds per cubic foot is Class 92.5 on the 2025 NMFTA 13-sub scale. Class 92.5 covers densities from 10 up to (but not including) 12 PCF. (On the older pre-2025 scale this was Class 100.)

Why does denser freight get a lower class?

Denser freight packs more weight into less trailer space, so it's cheaper for a carrier to haul per pound. The class scale rewards that with a lower number and a lower rate. Light, bulky freight takes up space without the weight, so it earns a higher class.

Find your density in pounds per cubic foot, then read across to the class whose range contains it. Each band is inclusive of its lower number and exclusive of the next one up, so a density that lands exactly on a boundary takes the lower (denser) class. For example, 22.5 PCF is Class 65, not Class 70.

Denser freight sits in a lower class and ships cheaper; the lighter it is for its size, the higher it climbs. The 2025 restructure (Docket 2025-1) reduced the density guideline to these 13 subs. Classes 77.5, 110, 150, 200 and 500 are no longer density bands — they now apply only to specific NMFC commodity listings where handling, stowability, or liability set the class.

How to read the chart

Work out your density first: multiply length × width × height in inches, divide by 1,728 for cubic feet, then divide the weight by that volume. Take the PCF you get and find the row whose range contains it. Each band is inclusive of its lower number and exclusive of the next one up, so a density sitting exactly on a boundary takes the lower, denser class. A pallet at exactly 22.5 PCF is Class 65, not Class 70.

Two things that quietly shift your row

The pallet. Measure floor-to-top with the pallet included — a standard pallet adds about 5.5–6 inches of height, which lowers your density and can move you a row up. Leave it out and the carrier’s scan won’t. Multiple pallets. A shipment of several different pallets isn’t read row-by-row and the classes aren’t averaged — carriers rate the whole line by its aggregate density. Class each pallet separately and your row won’t match the bill.

Common lookups

15 PCF is Class 70. 12 PCF is Class 85. 10 PCF is Class 92.5. 8 PCF is Class 100.
