The CBM Formula (cm, Inches & mm)
The CBM formula is always length × width × height — the only thing that changes is the divisor for your unit. From centimeters, divide by 1,000,000. From inches, divide by 61,024. From millimeters, divide by 1,000,000,000. From feet, divide cubic feet by 35.315. Then multiply by the carton quantity. Here’s each one with a worked example.
CBM from centimeters
Multiply the three sides in centimeters, then divide by 1,000,000 (because there are 1,000,000 cm³ in a cubic meter). Example: a 120×100×150 cm carton = 1,800,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 1.8 CBM. This is the most common case, since most cartons are measured in cm.
One formula, one divisor per unit. Get the divisor right and CBM is just multiplication.
CBM from inches
Multiply the three sides in inches, then divide by 61,024 (the number of cubic inches in a cubic meter, 39.37³). Example: a 48×40×60 in carton = 115,200 ÷ 61,024 = 1.888 CBM. Some people first find cubic feet (÷1,728) and then divide by 35.315 — same answer.
CBM from millimeters
Multiply the three sides in millimeters, then divide by 1,000,000,000 (a billion). Example: 1200×1000×1500 mm = 1,800,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 1.8 CBM — the same carton as the cm example, as it should be.
CBM from feet, and totalling a load
If you have cubic feet already, divide by 35.315 to get CBM (1 CBM = 35.315 ft³). For a shipment with several carton sizes, run the formula per size, multiply each by its quantity, and add the results — don’t average dimensions.
