How Many Boxes Fit on a Pallet? (Ti-Hi)
To find how many boxes fit on a pallet, work out Ti×Hi. Ti (tier) is boxes per layer: divide the pallet footprint — 48×40 in on a GMA pallet — by the box footprint, trying both orientations. Hi (high) is layers: divide the available stack height by the box height. Multiply the two. A 12×10×10 in box lands about 16 per layer × 9 layers = 144 boxes. Ti and Hi, in plain terms
Ti is short for tier — the boxes in one layer. Hi is short for high — the number of layers. People also write it “tie-high” or “tie high,” but it’s the same thing. Cases per pallet = Ti × Hi. It’s the standard way a buyer or warehouse specifies a pallet in two numbers.
Ti fills the footprint, Hi fills the height. The smaller of the two limits is the one that decides your number.
Boxes per layer (Ti)
Divide the pallet footprint by the box footprint. A GMA pallet is 48×40 in = 1,920 in²; a 12×10 in box is 120 in², so up to 16 fit a layer if they tile cleanly. The catch is orientation: boxes laid lengthwise vs turned 90° pack differently, and the best layer often mixes both. Watch overhang too — boxes past the pallet edge get crushed and rejected, so keep the pattern inside 48×40.
Layers high (Hi)
Divide the height you have by the box height. If a trailer gives ~100 in of usable height and the pallet deck is 5.5 in, you have ~94 in for product; 10 in boxes give 9 layers. But weight and crush can lower it: stack only as high as the bottom boxes can bear and the rack beam allows. Take the smaller of the height limit and the weight limit.
A worked example
A 12×10×10 in box on a 48×40 pallet: the footprint allows about 16 per layer, and 94 in of usable height over a 5.5 in deck allows 9 layers — so roughly 144 boxes, if weight permits. At 20 lb a box that’s 2,880 lb of product, which most floors and beams handle; a heavier box would cap the layers first.
