Dock Door Throughput
How many trucks a dock can turn in a shift comes down to one formula, per door: (shift hours × efficiency) ÷ dwell time, times the number of doors. The dominant lever is dwell time — how long each truck ties up a door. Here’s the math, a worked example, and how shaving dwell time buys more capacity than pouring a new dock.
The formula
Each door turns (shift hours × efficiency) ÷ dwell time trucks, and the facility turns that times the number of doors. The inputs: doors in service, shift hours, dwell time (how long a truck holds a door, spot to release), and efficiency (the share of the shift a door is actually working — rarely 100% once you count gaps, breaks, and waiting on trailers).
A worked example
Six doors, an 8-hour shift, 45-minute average dwell, 80% efficiency, 22 pallets a truck. Per door: (8 × 0.80) ÷ 0.75 = 8.5 trucks. Across six doors that’s about 51 trucks a shift — roughly 1,126 pallets. That’s your dock’s ceiling; no amount of rack behind it moves more than the doors can turn.
Dwell time is the lever
Everything bows to dwell time. Hold the same six doors and shift and just change how long each truck takes:

Cutting dwell from 45 to 30 minutes — appointment scheduling, pre-staging, drop-and-hook — lifts throughput 50%, from 51 to 77 trucks a shift, without touching the building. Squeezing efficiency from 80% to a perfect 100% only gets you to 64. Dwell wins.
You don’t add dock capacity by adding doors. You add it by getting trucks off the doors faster.
When the dock is the bottleneck
A building can have all the pallet positions in the world and still choke at the dock. If inbound trucks arrive faster than the doors can turn them, trailers queue, drivers wait, and you start paying detention on trucks stuck past their free time.
