How Many Pallet Positions Does a Warehouse Hold?
As a planning estimate, pallet capacity is (total area × usable %) ÷ area per position × levels. Three levers move it: how much of the floor is actually usable, how tightly the rack stores each pallet, and how many levels high you go. Here’s each, a rack-type density table, and a worked 50,000 sq ft example.
Start with usable area, not gross
A building’s stated square footage isn’t all rackable. Subtract docks, staging, battery charging, offices, and cross-aisles, and you’re usually left with 60–75% usable for storage. On a 50,000 sq ft building at 70% usable, that’s 35,000 sq ft of actual storage floor. Get this number wrong and everything downstream is wrong — it’s the biggest single source of over-optimistic capacity estimates.
Area per position: the rack-type lever
Each ground-level position eats its own footprint plus a share of the aisle that serves it. Denser rack shrinks that number and fits more positions on the same floor — here’s the same 35,000 usable sq ft, four levels high, by rack type:

Drive-in packs about 50% more positions than selective into the identical building — but the trade is selectivity, covered below.
Levels: cube, not floor
Capacity is a cube problem, not a floor problem. On the selective example, each added level is worth another ~2,593 positions: 3 levels = 7,778, 4 levels = 10,370, 5 levels = 12,963. Clear building height, not floor area, is often the real constraint — and the cheapest capacity you’ll ever add is a level you already have the height for.
The floor sets the footprint. The roof sets the capacity.
The density vs. selectivity trade
Denser rack isn’t free. Selective gives you direct access to every pallet — ideal for many SKUs with few pallets each. Drive-in, push-back, and double-deep pack more in but bury pallets behind other pallets, so they only pay off for a handful of SKUs with lots of pallets apiece.
